Dad died the next day.

Drake was the only one of us that wasn’t in a terribly awful mood, and he spent a lot of time trying to cheer everyone else up. I think it worked to some extent, but perhaps not the fullest extent that Drake had been hoping for. Still, I appreciated his effort, and I think the kids did too, even if nothing seemed quite normal, and they weren’t sure how to express their feelings.

With this sudden change came a lot of talks about how to properly express sadness, and ways of turning it into something more constructive. These were difficult talks to have, but I’d expected to have them at some point or another.

Soon, Freya’s birthday came and she was a child. Unfortunately, she still had lingering negative feelings from both of her grandparents’ deaths together, but I managed to talk to her and we worked through some bad things. Our family is a very huggy family, and it wasn’t long before we were all hugging each other instead.

I’m still very glad to see the kids pull to one another instead of away when they’re upset.

And no matter how different Cynemaer may think he is from the rest of his siblings, he and Dustin remain very close. I can be glad for that. As much as Morgyn and I don’t talk that much, it’s always nice to have Morgyn come by and I don’t know where I’d be without the idiot.

I imagine it’s much the same for Cyne and Dusty. Twins, after all, were born together for a reason.

The kids have developed a habit of hanging around each other in the mornings. Unfortunately, this hanging around in the mornings seems to frequently be in our bedroom, and I can’t say why.

Of course, I don’t want to discourage this, no. But I do wish they’d partake of these little get-togethers somewhere that is not at the foot of my bed at 6am. Some of us don’t have to wake up early anymore and are enjoying that.

But that morning was a special one.

As it happened, Freya had washed the dishes, and the sink broke. Dustin and Bryn tag-teamed the mess and took care of things so that neither Drake or myself would have to get up to do it.

I did still have to bake a cake, but there were worse things than baking a cake. I found a little extra joy in mundane things like that, even, and I can’t say if it’s because I’ve just come to enjoy such things, or if it was just the day.

It was our wedding.

And of course, it was raining. But I always figured if you’re going to have a goth wedding, you either need to have it on a day it’s raining, or on Halloween, or in a cemetery, or all three! All three is good.

Of course, there are no cemeteries nearby, and Hallow’s Eve isn’t terribly soon, so we settled for getting rained on. Where others found this to be a massive problem, we rolled with it. The good news is, our porch has so much space we don’t know what to do with it all, so it was plenty of space for the guests and the ceremony.

I enjoyed setting that up, too.

The ceremony itself was wonderful. Of course, we exchanged our vows, the rings, and cut the cake.

The rain wasn’t so loud that it drowned anything out, and we had a good time. I set up a buffet table for drinks and food, just a fruit punch fountain. Morgyn seemed to enjoy the punch.

Well, everyone did.

Caleb managed to make it, as did Siobhan. It just seemed right to invite Siobhan, given she was my first real friend since moving here from magic realm.

Also invited were Sergio and Morgyn of course. I couldn’t possibly get married without Morgyn there, though the blasted brat did spend half the reception pestering me about why it’d taken so long for us to get married.

It just did Morgyn, shut up.

Siobhan and Sergio were pretending they didn’t know each other. I decided to go along with that. Seemed a safer bet than reminding one of my closest friends that I stole her boyfriend…

(As an aside, Ezio didn’t steal Sergio from Siobhan, MCCC deleted their relationship. Not sure why. The night of the wedding is also the first night Akira had come out of his urn. I like to think his son getting married had summoned him. And finally, it took them so long to get married because I have autonomous proposals on, and I was waiting for one or the other to propose. I ended up having to make one do it.)

Then, after everyone had gone home, and the kids had all gone to sleep, I heard a weird noise and found dad standing in the parlour.

“Look at you, kiddo,” he said. “All grown up and married now. You chose that dress well.”

“Thanks dad,” I said. “Kind of wish you were there.”

“Oh, don’t be silly,” he answered. “Of course I was. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. You tell that boy he’d better take care of you.”

I laughed. “Don’t worry,” I said. “He is.” I’m happier with Drake than I ever thought I’d be.
