Eisenstern 1.11

Notes: Fun trivia, Eisenstern 1.10 was post 110. Also unfortunately for him, Ezio and Drake rolled 4 kids.

The holidays were soon to draw upon us. I’ve never been one for holidays-they seem primarily like a waste of time to me-but Bryn seemed interested in the festivities and I swallowed my pride and figured out how to pull off a proper Winterfest celebration. When I still lived alone, I got by shooting off fireworks on my own. But it was just me back then. Well, I guess Bryn was there for that too, though she hadn’t been born yet.

We put up a tree, opened presents, and had a family meal. Drake was kind enough to set the table while I was cooking, and I didn’t even have to ask him to do it.

I love him. Far too much. Not enough.

These two, Cynemaer is Old English, meaning famous royal. My own name is potentially derived from element cyne. Dustin roots in Norse torsten, thorsten, meaning Thor’s stone.

To my surprise, our newest bundle of joy was born after the Winterfest activities had ended, and turned out to be two bundles, not one! No wonder this pregnancy was so much harder on me. Of course, I didn’t have to deal with the insane mood swings that I dealt with when I was pregnant with Bryn. Maybe that’s why she’s such an angel. She already got her crazy mood swings out of her system!

We have two little boys, now, Cynemaer and Dustin. Cynemaer’s got fangs. I suspect he’s a vampire like Drake is, unfortunately. Vampires live forever, and while spellcasters can too, there’s a lot that goes into the immortality potion. As in, nobody’s ever seen it, or knows what its ingredients are. Well, that’s not accurate. The sages know. But still.

Now I’m just concerned about teething…

But, to my fortune, the boys grew up just fine. Dustin is a talkative little thing, reminds me of his auncle Morgyn, always running his mouth at someone. Cynemaer’s always getting into something, like his big sister, except he’s also got a little more attitude than his sister does.

Bryn remains an absolute little joy. Her birthday’s coming up. I’ve already gotten the guest list together, and decided on a cake recipe. I’ve never baked a cake before. I guess we get to see if I can do it. I look forward to the attempt. It’ll also be nice to introduce them all to their extended family members.

We have rather a large family, somehow.

To my utter surprise, who should come by but Sergio? I haven’t seen him since before Bryn was born, and she’s nearly a child now. She’ll be starting school soon and he just randomly shows up-ugh. I’m trying not to be annoyed about it, I know he doesn’t like kids anyway, it’s just frustrating.

Then, it’s not as if Bryn asks about him. As far as she’s concerned, Drake is her father, and maybe I should just go with that, too. He’s been a good father to Bryn, and now that the boys are here, he’s a good father to them too. It’s almost like he was always part of our family.

Also surprisingly, my mother came by. I didn’t know she’d aged up to elder, but I suppose that’s not surprising. People do that thing where they get older, and mother never seemed interested in living forever. Morgyn will, and one would have a solid argument for living forever with Morgyn because we don’t leave that dolt alone, but she doesn’t seem interested.

It was odd to talk to her. I was raised by dad, not her, and our relationship has always been loose and strained. She’s always favoured Morgyn over me, and that’s fine. She’s allowed. (Morgyn is better than me at many things, to be fair.) It’s just obvious in the things she says and the other things she gets hung up on and at some point I decided I didn’t want to listen to it anymore.

Not sure how she got into the house, though. Well, I probably left the door unlocked, and she likely smells like me so Drake wouldn’t have been too alarmed.

The boys are growing quickly, almost as quickly as Bryn. Dustin never did get out of his habit of talking to everyone and everything, and even well past the point he could talk in proper sentences, he still loved to babble to himself or the stuffed bear Drake and I got them.

Cynemaer’s taken a liking to Drake, and I can’t make much progress teaching him much of anything. He’ll outright refuse to listen to me from time to time, and go find Drake. This must be that infamous going to daddy because mommy said no situation everyone always talks about with parenting.

Well, unfortunately for our kids, Drake and I are fairly synchronised in how we want to handle this child-rearing thing and the varying restrictions we place on them. No getting around rules by switching parents around here.

Through much fortune and playing with potions until something magically worked (ha), I managed to discover and create the immortality potion myself. Seconds before it was time to age into adult! I have really bad timing. Either that or impressively good timing, I’m not sure which that was.

In any case, I’d been somewhat looking for it, as I didn’t want to someday leave Drake alone, and with Cynemaer also likely a vampire, that further complicated things. I don’t want to leave Cynemaer either, not that he’s terribly fond of me. With that work behind me, I can focus on learning more useful things, like scruberoo and repairio.

I’ll be quite glad when I figure those out. I am so tired of cleaning up paint splatters and chocolate sauce.

Our dearest Brynja aged up into child! Now she’ll be going to school, and it seems like only yesterday she was born. I’m absolutely blessed to have her in my life. She’ll do good things. She’s already such a sweetheart.

I’m not sure if she made a wish. I’m not sure if she knows what a wish is! But I deigned not to ask about it. She’ll tell me, or not, as she chooses. But if she did make a wish, I hope it comes true. Well, when you’re a spellcaster, anything can come true if you believe enough. Or cast enough spells.

Unfortunately, I haven’t sensed the spark of magic in her. I’m not so certain Bryn has it.

Diaval has also grown. He’s a much bigger cat now, and he spends a lot of his time watching over Bryn and following her around the house. It’s not that he doesn’t like the boys, he just certainly has a soft-spot for Bryn. It’s sweet, and I’m still very glad he took it upon himself to start watching over the kids.

I know, even when I’m not here, between Drake and Diaval, the kids are safe. I wonder what would happen if one of them was threatened? Some say familiars have mysterious powers even spellcasters don’t quite understand. Perhaps protecting their spellcaster’s children is somewhere on the list.

As curious as I am, I much prefer not knowing.

Incidentally, I’ve noticed a strange new presence in the house, and this one doesn’t seem to be… alive. Or human. I’m not sure what to make of that. But if I listen at night, there occasionally comes a sound that seems a bit like a cat’s meow cloaked in otherwordly echoes.

So… a ghost cat, I presume. I’m not sure how we got one of those, but I’d like to meet it someday.
